Zoe

My husband and I adopted "Alexa" in June of 2001, from NVSR. She was the foster dog of Janet and Ray Barnes of Virginia Beach, who had driven up north in early June to pick her up and give her a foster home on behalf of the overstuffed NVSR. Janet and Ray Barnes were active foster parents for the Collie-Sheltie Rescue of SE Virginia for many years. As it happens, all three of our adopted Shelties were fostered by Janet Barnes!
"Alexa" was the second rescue Sheltie we adopted that summer. We renamed her Zoe, and she has been a beloved and valued member of our family ever since then. I have taken all three of our Shelties for canine obedience training at Canine Training Unlimited in Chesapeake, VA. Each has successfully completed basic, sub-novice, and novice obedience classes. Zoe is a loving dog and she's always eager to please. She pays very close attention to everything going on around her.     The really big news is that on Friday, November 4, 2005, Zoe and I took and passed the Therapy Dogs International exam. As soon as TDI sends us her badge and credentials, Zoe and I will begin making pet therapy visits to area hospitals, nursing homes, assisted living facilities, etc. Zoë's big brother, Zachary, the third Sheltie we adopted in 2001, has been a certified therapy dog since May, 2003.
Zoe is in excellent health, she is very active, and she is the guardian of our household. She protects us from all the passersby and the letter carrier, and she has lots of canine friends in the neighborhood with whom she plays. She is a wonderful dog, and she has a loving and happy home. We are very fortunate to have Zoe in our lives, and I'd be lost without her. She licks me awake everyday at 6:30 am. What a great way to start the day!

Sammy

Sammy has adjusted very well to his new home and indeed getting very spoiled - we are definitely wrapped around his paws. He has 4 cat brothers who rub against him in acceptance, but he ignores them! Sammy enjoys boating and even has his own life vest. Some days he goes to the office with his mom where he is adored by all.

Arrow

My mom is typing this because I hit too many keys at once.  She also says that I get drool on the screen, but I think she is being dramatic.  I am doing very well in my new home.  I live with a dog trainer and her friends are also dog trainers, so I get a lot of attention.  I go to work with my mommy every day and see all of my doggie friends.  We walk and play and have a really good time.  My mom says that I am especially bright and that I have learned more commands than she expected in the short time I have been in my forever home.  I have even stopped having accidents in the house and mom says I may be able to be out of the crate for good within the next few months.  I like it here with my mom and dad.  Dad is more fun than Mom because he doesn’t have as many rules and he gives me cookies for just being me.  Mom makes me roll over or sit or crawl or some other stupid trick for them.  When I get frustrated I bark while I do my tricks.  That should teach her!  I went trick or treating on Halloween with some of my friends.  I am the one dressed as a chef.  The baby in the bathrobe is Mia and she is one of my best buddies.  The dragon is the famous Leroy Hanula and my pal Charlie was Austin Powers.  We all had a really good time.  Thank you for checking in on me!  I am very happy and much loved.  Oh, and Mom said to tell you that my name has been changed to Arrow (after the Harry Neilson song “Me and my Arrow).

Duncan

I love my new home, Bobby is 15 and we play catch the ball several times a day and also with Dad.  I have been keeping him busy having fun while his Grandma needed his mom.  He has some cool friends, they all love me and I love them.  We play Lacrosse together and boy do I make them run, I am faster than they are.  My other pet room mate Heidi loves me too, she is short, sweet and very pretty. We keep each other company and she is too old now to run with the ball, she watches and barks me on to victory. I have a new big bed, a great enclosed porch for sunning every day and my own cool pet bowls.  Also, a great collection of balls, 6 to be exact.  My parents never stop telling me how much they love me and how beautiful I am and lucky to have found me.  I think the same of them, we are a family.  They can’t wait to bring me back to show me off next year and who knows, maybe more sheltie family will come home with me.

Ring

Ring is doing well, getting used to the deeper Boston snows. He loved to roll in the snow here, making snow angels, and after testing the depth, he flopped right into it. In picture, Ring is on the right, Emma (adopted by them in 2003) in the middle. Nikki is on the left.

Knight

My life has been good since I arrived in my new home. I have an older brother and a younger sister. I have full access to a fenced backyard and sleep in my parent's room or behind the couch everynight. Thanks for finding me such a nice home and I hope all my fellow adoptees are making out okay too.

Candy

I am doing great, and could not ask for a better forever home. I am so loved here by all. Even the neighbors! They all think I am cute and loveable(which I am). Even my vet likes me alot. He hopes that when ever the day comes that he will need to be taken care of that my forever parents will take him in. I just got back from Disney and enjoyed riding in our RV. It was alot of fun and I even got to ride on the Disney Tram, and then stayed with other dogs and their kennel till my parents came back to walk me during the day. We really had a nice time. My dad took pictures of me riding the tram but they are not ready yet. Oh yea, I have several squirrels that I chase in the backyard. They sure are fast. My parents and I play ball in the back and chase. I think they let me catch them but I'm not sure. When they whistle for me I come running. I go back and forth between them, and then I go inside and get my treat and take a nap. The cats took over my bed so now I sleep with my parents most of the time although they did go buy the cats their own bed that is just like mine.

Jonathan

I am doing very well. My name is now Jonathan. My new friends say it’s short for John-Doe-Rescue-Dog, ha-ha, they joke a lot. My new friends are really nice and I kinda like my new name. I have a fenced-in back yard that I can run around in if I want. I don’t do that too much, cause—you know—I had to live outside when I was growing up. I like it inside better, because it’s warm and comfortable there.

I go for walks every day with my new friends. That’s neat, too. Did I say there is another Sheltie here? Her name is Murphy and she is nice, too. She is older than me, but we get along real good. When I first got here, Murphy was all sad cause her sheltie friend, Kramer, died. But now she is happy. I think maybe I helped her a little. I like her a lot, even though she is too old to play with. We just kinda hang together.

Casey

I got a new name! I was called Doc before I came here and mom thought I ought to have a sweeter name (she’s like that, always kissing me and stuff). She tried Casey and I thought it was a fine name. It seemed familiar to me somehow. I’m quite happy to be called Casey and I come when I am called. I love my new home and my new family and they love me. And Oh, I forgot to mention, I have a Grandma here too. She is so good to me. Sometimes when my mom and dad have to go somewhere, she takes care of me. I really love my new Grandma.
